Wednesday 4th June
Arrived in Irun yesterday about 9am. Stumbled out of the train into bright sunshine and at the first café spotted Bernt and Peter having breakfast.
The Albergue de Pelegrinos was predictably closed (opening times 16.00 – 22.00) so dumped bags at B and P’s pension. Free day today while we wait for others to join us but we spend it walking to and from the airport in search of Bernt’s rucksack which is lost en route. Bernt seems unperturbed but we are anxious for him and fear he may eventually get very smelly. We can book into the Albergue at 4pm and we are first in the queue. The rather negative hospitalera is adamant that we can’t reserve for Mo and Derek. We are given a room for six and from then on everything gets confused. It ends up that Bernt and Derek sleep in the garage and we have a stray Dutchman in with us. There are only 2 showers for hoards of people. Eventually get out for civilised aperos in sunny square.
Tourist info hopeless for arranging onward baggage carrying so we arrange our own with Pepelo, amazingly accommodating taxi driver. Mediocre dinner. Somehow the interesting raciones got lost on the way to Cairo.
Adding insult to injury, I slept badly as I was cold in a sheet sleeping bag. The ‘by the book’ hospitalera could only find 2 blankets and I bequeathed mine to Bernt as he only had the clothes he stands up.
